Our Unit of Inquiry is WHO WE ARE
An inquiry into Nutrition, fitness, growth and development , drug use and disease

Central Idea 

As we grow and mature, our decisions, rights and responsibilities can become increasingly complex.

Lines of Inquiry 

The physical and emotional changes our bodies go through during puberty.

 

Our personal decisions about health and hygiene.

 

The changes in responsibility as we mature and develop.


We began the unit last week and began discussing What we already know! 

Last week's Notes:

Today (Mon 17/5) we had a special guest speaker Ms Catherine Wood from the Hong Gong Drug Advisory centre who spoke to the children about the dangers of drugs. She will return on Tuesday to continue her  informative presenation.

During this unit we will work closely with Ms Thompson during PE. Last Friday we began a FITNESS test (from Australia) and undertook a series of physical tests to determine our fitness levels. 
We will also visit the LEAP (Life Education Van) during the unit to reinforce the learning we are doing in class.

HOMEWORK THIS WEEK MON 17th

Spelling Words: health, nutrition, exercise, vitamins, minerals, protein, fitness, disease, balanced, carbohydrates

Learn these words and use them to create a 'Mini poster' to promote 'A Healthy Lifestyle'.

Literacy Homework: Write a recount about a funny/ memorable incident you remember and talk about it with your family.

Maths- PROBLEM SOLVING- complete the sheets using all 4 operations. 
 

In Maths this week we are continuing to revise concepts covered this year as well as using 24 hour time and problem solving.

In the next few weeks we will be assessing the students on their skills as we prepare to write school reports. A copy of the key skills we will assess students on is located in Term 3 Parent Information (below). So if you can help your child revise these it would help them perform well in their assessments.

Term 3-Parent Information


Dear Parents,

We began our unit in the last week of Term 2 with a fabulous 'Tuning In' session. We were given boarding passes to board an aeroplane for a flight simulation, safety check and on in flight meal to Europe to visit the Museum of History. We also visited a resource centres and a got dressed up in clothes from other civilisations for a FAB photo shoot. Last week we began looking closer at artifacts that link us to past civilisations and looking at how technology has changed over time.

Mathematics

In Maths this term we will be revising and learning the following key objectives. If you would like to strengthen your child’s mathematical skills please focus on the following objectives listed on the back.

Year 5 Maths Objectives

Recall with speed and accuracy multiplication facts to 10X 10

Read, write, compare and order fractions

Explain what each digit represents in whole numbers and decimals with up to two places, and partition, round and order these numbers

Use knowledge of place value and addition and subtraction of two digit numbers to derive sums and differences and doubles and halves.

Use efficient methods to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals with up to two places.

Read time to the nearest minute and second using intervals of 10 minutes, 5 minutes and 1 minute on 12 and 24  hour clocks.

Draw and measure lines to the nearest millimeter: measure and calculate the perimeter of regular and irregular  polygons; use the formula for the area of a rectangle to calculate the rectangle’s area.

Use mental and written strategies for multiplication and division when solving problems in real life situations.

This unit will include strong links to English and Mathematics.

In English it will involve:
A study of Non- Fiction Texts
Understanding what is read
Questioning each other
Note- taking
Comparing information using Venn diagrams
Highlighting important / significant information
Journal writing  e.g."A Day in the life of a Roman"
Skimming and scanning texts to locate important facts

In Mathematics we will look at concepts which will directly link to our unit of inquiry
Looking at Number Systems- who invented it? 
What were the ways of recording and counting in the past?
Calendars- who invented them and why?
Mapping- which society began this first?
We will look at Shapes in society and how 2D and 3D shapes are used in buildings and differnt societies.
How tesselations, patterns are used in Islamic art etc

We will also be revising concepts taught throughout the year and continually practising our multiplication and division skills.

Reading for at least 30 mins each night

Spelling- Maths words related to space and shape- researching meanings of words

Language- Postcards from Paradise- writing to classmates about an adventure from the holidays

Maths- Revision sheet to consolidate skills from Term 2

Inquiry Homework             The children were given a "Thinker's Notebook a few weeks ago to record thinking, pictures, wonderings, understanding and questions related to our new Unit of Inquiry. Please see the inside cover of the notebook for more information.  There is an expectation that children record something each week as part of their homework.
